Keong Mas Imax Theatre TMII

Building the Keong Emas IMAX Theater in 1984 was a significant accomplishment for Wijaya Kusuma Contractors (WKC). They faced many engineering challenges that highlighted their skills:

Unique Dome Design: WKC built the theater's remarkable dome, which has a complex shape called a hyperbolic parabolic dome. That required careful engineering and precise execution to ensure it was intense and visually appealing.

IMAX Screen Setup: WKC installed the largest IMAX screen in Asia. The screen's size and weight required creative solutions for properly mounting and aligning it inside the dome, ensuring a great viewing experience for all 836 seats.

Sound Quality: WKC focused on the theater's acoustics. The dome's shape could distort sound, so unique treatments were added to ensure clear and enjoyable sound throughout the theater.

Structural Support: Since the building is in an earthquake-prone area, WKC needed strong engineering solutions. We considered seismic activity and wind loads to ensure the dome's stability and safety over time.

Limited Technology: In the early 1980s, WKC lacked today's advanced digital tools. We relied on manual calculations and physical models to design the dome. That made the work more labor-intensive, but it showcased their engineering skills and problem-solving abilities.

Building Materials and Techniques: WKC sourced special materials and developed unique construction methods to achieve the dome design. We had to place materials carefully to keep the dome strong and support the large IMAX screen.

Seating Layout: WKC designed the seating for 836 people in the dome's curved interior. We ensured every seat had a clear screen view while keeping the audience comfortable.

WKC's success in overcoming these challenges demonstrated our technical expertise and completed the Keong Emas IMAX Theater, a landmark project that reflects their construction skills.
